What does pilpul mean literally?

By literally, I mean literally, not figuratively.

Pepper.
You know, just last week I ate some food packaged in France that came
with a fork and a little bag with salt and pepper in it. And each
half of the bag was labeled in about 5 languages, and just yesterday I
looked at the labels and exulted that one of them was Hebrew, and I
looked at each word, but still didn't put two and two together. I can
be pretty stupid.

Of course not as stupid as the publication for Jews I sometimes read
that said pilpul literally meant hair-splitting.

Thanks.
